Containment Unit is a spatial computing art experience for Apple Vision Pro by technical artist + solo dev K.C. Austin. The robotic device hovers in your space, projecting a futuristic sci-fi UI that lets you create and summon procedural lifeforms - living digital sculptures that pulse, drift, and respond to you and your environment in rich audiovisual harmony.
Containment Unit represents my vision of what spatial computing can be: a blend of art, technology, and playful, super-responsive interaction. As someone who has been experimenting with artificial life for over 20 years, the prospect of bringing my creations into the physical world is a dream come true. With Apple Vision Pro's environment lighting, world sensing, hand tracking and beautiful high resolution displays, we can finally create experiences where artistic creations feel truly present in our world.
This project draws inspiration from my love of biology, generative art, modular synthesis, and sci-fi. I wanted to create something that feels both futuristic and organic - where technology enables creativity and wonder rather than just utility. The app is an ongoing experiment, the initial version is tight in scope but highly polished, with a solid foundation I can add new lifeform designs to over time.
The app was built with Unity Polyspatial in the Apple Vision Pro using Houdini, Blender, and Ableton Live with a heavy use of shaders. If you have any questions about how it was built, or what it was like developing in the headset for the headset, feel free to reach out on the contact links below!
